You Are Right (and so are they)

So I was watching an online argument the other day.

It was the usual stuff of ‘actually… well research shows… no actually this research… my background is…’ you know:

The stuff we’ve all done.

Wink wink.

Some of the wording, terms and attitude were/are identical to stuff I have posted, responded to and written about over the years.

I am reading the wording and despite the issue being a deeply sad event… the comments and opinion pieces weren’t, to my mind: coming from kindness at all (despite saying they were).

They were coming from a place of:

I am right.

And you are ALL wrong!

I am reading this and literally my cheeks burning red with a weird, nasty, strange mixture of sadness and embarrassment.

I have done everything the trolls have. And then some.

I am deeply embarrassed and ashamed of my behaviour and as I reflected upon this shame and embarrassment I realised something fundamental running underneath pretty much everything we see, hear, taste and touch in the online and real worlds:

From our own individual perspectives: we are right.

I have never been raped. I have no idea what my close friend who has been through this feels like or what is involved in her recovery (is this even possible?).

My friend has never lived on a council estate and has never been beaten up on said council or lived that experience.

Stay with me, there’s a point.

So, enter a world event, local scandal, political hot potato and both us us are going to be:

Seeing that world event, local scandal, political hot potato – through our own specific lens of reality and perception based upon our own unique and varied experiences of life and our responses to those experiences within that life.

If you add to that an education, different education, indoctrinated education, no education: being married not married being gay being straight – all differing and unique experiences of life.

Then our individual realities and perceptions of said realities are going to be vastly different.

Even if we think we agree.

Yep.

I was mindblown.

Here’s an example, have you ever thought you agreed on something with a friend, then had a deliberate dig or unintentional excavation – no agenda, it just happened – and you then realised that actually you had significant differences in opinion or how that opinion is applied?

I pondered on this mind-blowing mind fuck as I unplugged from social media and sat in my own realisations. I sat in them and allowed the mental arguments to rattle round my (still embarrassed) brain:

‘Yeah but I have this experience so I MUST be right, because THEY don’t have this experience’ … ‘oh hang on, but if they have THEIR experience maybe they see it differently so perhaps they are right’ … ‘oh but I have this information they don’t have so maybe I AM right!’ … ‘oh but how do I know how accurate it…’

And it went on…

And on…

And on…

Until…

I realised.

That in a quantum dualistic world…

Maybe everyone is RIGHT.

Everyone.

Yes.

Seriously.

And then I felt better.
