The Guilt Of The Working Classes Pt. 2.

She lay there, dying, her eyes heavy:

From the truth of her abandon.

She abandoned herself, you see.

From a, potentially, wealthy family,

With a, potentially, significant inheritance:

She fucked it all up.

She said ‘no we’re fine’ when offered free coal

She said ‘no, we don’t need it’ when given a job offer.

She said ‘no, you have them’ when offered shares in the company

She said:

‘No’.

‘No’.

‘No’.

To a better life.

Why?

Because she wasn’t used to it, that’s why.

So I sat there, on the cold carpet-less floor,

Begging for upward mobility,

Yes, even at five years old:

I knew something was in sight:

And that she was going to piss it all up the wall:

Even before it arrived.

With that working class prevention.

The opposite,

Of middle class privilege.

We are down here: they are up there:

And we must know our place.

My mum didn’t know any better,

But I am angry, oh god am I angry.

But,

Yet,

However…

It might have taken me half a century (or more!)

But now I see it:

It is okay to say:

I am not okay being poor.

I am not okay being poor working class,

Hell, I am not okay being working class.

Stop for a moment and feel…

If you are from this background:

Feel… the resistance… the judgement:

The ‘hey I’m working class and proud!!’.

I know it means different things,

To be working class,

But for me: it was dark,

Cold, 70’s Britain.

No heating.

Wet windows.

Outside toilets.

Premature death.

Beer. Whiskey.

Domestic violence.

Why. The Fuck. Would I be proud of that?

And how… dare I say this?

YES…

…the fuck did I ever get comfortable with it?

Because, let’s face it: I did.

I felt better… in the sink (the stink) than I did:

In the approaching success.

W.

T.

F.

Was I conditioned?

Is that why I was poor for so long?

Can we break the programme?
By being mother fucking honest?

Yes… I can.

Ready?

Breathe….

Shake some beliefs?

Excellent….

Let’s GO.

Part of a series… let’s reprogramme it… grab the next to rewire 😉
